Bill Ehler began experimenting with artificial stone in the early 1970’s as the owner operator of the concrete construction company Arroyo Design located in Central California.

In 1978 he changed the company name to the more descriptive Natural Design and changed the company focus to building faux rock, primarily with the swimming pool industry.

In 1984 Ehler opened a branch office in Auburn, Ca. and expanded into building swimming pools that did not look at all like typical residential pools, but instead resembled a natural swimming hole or pond one would find in nature.
As the originator of the swimming hole concept, Bill Ehler and Natural Design are recognized as pioneers & innovators in the swimming pool and faux rock industries.

Mission Statement

Natural Design is committed to designing and building quality and architecturally unique residential swimming pools with our sculpted stone, swimming hole concept.  We will remain adventurous with our designs and conscientious about the quality of our construction.  We choose to remain a small custom business and maintain control of all projects by keeping our construction in house, without sub-contractors.  We will continue to stay abreast of the technical advances in our industry, to ensure that our pools are as energy efficient and user friendly as possible.  We will make every effort to minimize any inconvenience to our clients by providing a written construction schedule and to invite client input during the design and building process.
